HARD EARNED VICTORY

Every race you win..is hard earned..whether on a running track or in the Arena of Life...so when I won the Athletics New South Wales Premiership over 35yrs 100m on the weekend it was a Sweet..Sweet Victory..It was actually my first Race of the Season...not particularly fast yet technically it was probably the best race I've run since I was 22 years old which is significant at the race was a dead heat for first...The chap who was given the same time as me was 20 years younger than me!..Thats right...Twenty Years !

I would like you to put that into some kind of perspective...just think about it...two decades of youthfulness against a 62 year old...its astronomical!

How can I do it...What does it take to develop the body to a point where it is capable of defeating someone who is so much younger..The answer is in a way quite simple...its called hard..excrutiating work...In particular the last couple of weeks where I have been recieving flexibility stretching work with Wayne Luckey..my Coach...Oh Boy...what a Feeling...my body being wrenched from its joints...muscles stretching...tendons protesting...mind trying to relax so the process can do what its meant to do....

Anyhow the process is working..I am becoming more technically proficient...running better...stronger..so hopefully...the results will prove positive.

SONIC BOOMER

Well the day has come and gone...It was indeed an event of astronomical proportions...Running against a jet fighter plane capable of travelling at over 800 kph.!...Well I made it...It was a truely amazing experience...The Media were there in force...Television Cameras from Channels 7,9 and 10 and the United States..The Press as well...to say nothing of the dozens on friends and onlookers who turned up on the beautiful day to experience the event with me.

There were the usual Press and Media interviews and Radio Interviews before the race at the Air Action base in the beautiful Hunter Valley...it is truely a beautiful and serene treasure...well worth a look and time to explore...and of course should you want the opportunity to fly in a Jet Fighter Plane just like Tom Cruise in Top Gun...then you can very shortly go to the Air Action link on our www.thejohnwall.com site to explore the wonderful experience of flying by the seat of your pants!

I must admit I wasn't totally ready for the unbelievable sound of the jet engines so close to me when I was sitting in the Starting Blocks ready for the gun to go off to signal the start of the race...it was AWSOME!

I had chosen 100 meters as the distance for the race because its the Olympic distance...however I expected the Jet to overtake me before the end ....and it did..but...but...I did beat the Jet over 60 Meters...!! which folks is an astronomical feat...by seventy meters the jet was travelling at 200 kph...and of course it makes my last 30 meters look really slow...actually I'm going really fast....WoW...what an unbelievable experience...It was great...AND...my Son Gabriel was in the Fighter Jet filming for Channel Seven with an On-board camera...He is also a Pilot. Why did I do this...essentially to show that nothing is impossible...don't let things hold you down...give your dreams a go....However it was also as a personal tribute to the life of my Mother Joyce who passed away in August...She was always a great and loving supporter of mine and loved to see the Medals I used to bring back to her after competitions...She would have loved to have watched...maybe she was...

OLD AGE..SHOULD WE EMBRACE IT?

I have been asked many times over the last few years why I just can't let go of my Youth....Are you not happy to grow old gracefully?...Why can't you just grow old and forget about this Youth thing?

Quite simply the answer is NO...I am not prepared to grow old gracefully...I'm going to go down fighting and screaming and kicking...because Old to me is so often synonymous with illness..creaking bones...ageing skin...lack of energy...( yes even sexual energy )...so I don't want to go there...don't want to live there....don't want to be a part of the Old generation....HOWEVER...

I DO WANT TO BE A VITAL PART OF THE " AGE REVOLUTION "....ITS HAPPENING EVERYWHERE IN THE LAND OF CLUB REJUVIN8...WERE BREAKING ALL THE RULES HERE...WALKING THE HIGH GROUND...CLIMBING MOUNTAINS...LOVING...EXERCISING...STRENGTHENING....REVITALISING...BECOMING THE NEW YOUTH....

TODAY THE MEDIA REFER TO THE OVER 60s AS THE NEW 40s AND WHY NOT...WE ARE SIMPLY LIVING A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE FOR AS LONG AS PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE...ENJOYING...REJOICING IN THE LIFE OPPORTUNITY WE HAVE...RECOGNISING THE POTENTIAL OF OUR BODIES TO REGENERATE AND REJUVIN8...HOW CAN WE CELEBRATE THIS NEW YOUTH ?...HOW CAN WE DO IT WITHOUT FEELING LIKE WE'RE SELLING OUT WHERE OUR AGE TELLS US WE SHOULD BE ?..WELL ITS SIMPLE...JUST START TO WANT TO BE A MORE VITAL ...HAPPY ...AND PRODUCTIVE HUMAN BEING...BY BEING!

ONWARD INTO THE VALLEY

I KNOW THAT I AM AT THE POINT OF NO RETURN...WHERE YOU EITHER GET STRONG...OR GET OUT!!!...THATS THE TOUGH PLACE I FIND MYSELF IN AT THE MOMENT...GYM WORK AND TRACK WORK AT THIS LEVEL ARE TAKING ITS TOLL..THE BODY KNOWS ITS WORKING TO ITS LIMITS...AND BEYOND...DO I KEEP ON GOING...OR DO I QUIT?

OBVIOUSLY AS I WANT TO MAKE AN IMPACT ON THE WORLD MASTERS GAMES IN SYDNEY NEXT YEAR I HAVE TO KEEP ON KEEPING ON...AND MY COACHES WAYNE LUCKEY AND LARRY SPENCER HAVE THEIR VERY FIXED AND RIGID POSITION ON MY TRAINING AND MY EFFORTS AND MOTIVATION...YES I AM TO A DEGREE SELF MOTIVATED...THEY HAVE RAISED THE BAR...AND I HAVE TO MAKE IT.

HARD IN THE WEIGHT ROOM

Last season I would go to the Gym once or twice a week...I did not or was unable to use the appropriate protein powder to enhance my training abilities and muscle restoration.( protein under severe training regimen is essential )..Last season I came second in the National Championships in both the 60 meters and 100 meters...I was below par...I had lost ten kilograms from the previous season and was underpowered...kind of like putting leaded fuel in the latest ferrari...nothing seemed to work as it should...

This year its a little different...My good sponsor the 4 in 1 Family Health & Fitness group have worked with me to really build my strength profile...Working with a team like 4 in 1 has really made a difference...instead of just putting in one day a week..maybe two..I am now training 3 days a week and really pumping it....I've amped up the power and religiously hit the Max Gainer Protein & Carbohydrate blend by Balance....the result is basically a Rejuvin8ted Me!!! AND WAIT...THERES MORE....

My Track training schedule is starting to prove that what goes down in the Gym...comes down on the track...Working with my Track Coaches Wayne Luckey and Larry Spencer..they are developing a programme that will hopefully see me ( barring injury ) on the winners podium more often than not.

What are my Goals this Season...Well...this is the last season before the World Masters Games next year and my primary Goal this year is to break THE WORLD RECORD. In order to do this every single aspect of my race model must be perfect...the track conditions must be perfect...the weather must be warm and the following wind..kind to me. IF...and its a big IF...then I stand a good chance of breaking the World Record set by Britisher Ron Philips in 1991. That record of 11.70 seconds for the 100 meters still stands.
I would dearly love to bring that record back to Australia.

So in closing...keep believing...be brave...take risks...eat well...and Love someone....believe me I think its the one ingredient I was lacking last year...This year I am totally in Love..with Annette Evans...and I am truely blessed by this experience..If I've just let the World know...then the World is a better place for knowing.

WINTER COLDS & WINTER CHILLS

One of the most important things that our bodies can tell us is how it is feeling...Our bodies sensitive mechanisms are designed to literally keep us informed as to how it is operating...This subtle information is priceless...whether we heed the information being given to us at any given time is up to us entirely...but if you do not listen to your body...you do so at your own peril...I'll explain.

Every Cell in our bodies...and there are literally billions of them perform a specific function...every cell contains mitochondria...literally the battery cell of each individual sell...all of these work in concert with each other...working together to keep the body functioning...in some cases fighting foreign bacteria or virus's that have invaded us...but mostly keeping a finger on the pulse of our being.

That is why when the weather turns cold...on a particular day...one minute hot..next minute freezing...our bodies adjust for this...for a time....but...we must do the rest...when you Feel cold...put something extra on....If you feel hot...take it off...Don't go from air conditioning on a hot day into the heat and vice versa...our bodies can't deal with this all the time....

That is why we become prone to catching that chill which can then become a cold..a common cold is not a virus...the flu is...and can be contacted by touch or transported in the air we breathe...so make sure you are protected as best you can especially if you travel to work on public transport...where people are coughing and sneezing...its a sure fire way to pick something up...

WINTER TRAINING HAS ARRIVED!

Remarkable...Winter Training has arrived...This is a very interesting event...not only for me...but for YOU as well...WHY?...Well if you want to maintain your fitness...and flexibility...you must continue with a daily programme of exercise...even when its freezing cold and you don't want to get out of bed....By all means keep the warm socks and Long John's on...of course you want to be warm when you exercise...but continue to do SOMETHING...Exercise as I have always said is not necessarily pounding around running tracks....Maybe it is for ME but for YOU its as simple as doing some stretching on the carpet in the lounge room...yes even with the heater on if required..but you will quickly warm up..even with a basic stretching programme...but please...KEEP UP YOUR BODY AWARENESS...

Of course as the weather gets colder...we tend to eat more...and what happens...? the waistline increases...its not rocket science....so what can we do about it...Personally I am not averse to putting on a little weight...but I also know that I can burn it off when required...and believe me I DO EXERCISE MORE THAN THE AVARAGE BEAR...

MAKING THE MOST OF THE BREAK

Yes...well here we are...its April in beautiful Sydney Australia and I'm on my break between Summer competition and Winter Training...

I kind of wonder each year whether I will continue with my Athletic pursuits...the end of a long season makes me tired and weary...Yes...even Me....but then after a few weeks break I'm making the big decisions to get back to my Coaches Wayne Luckey and Larry Spencer so I can get focused again for the long haul ahead that will lead me to the new season which starts in September.

COMING DOWN

The National Championships for Masters is over...I have run my last two races of the year...so how did I perform...Well....I was beaten in both my events..the 60meters and 100meters by the Queenslander Wayne Cousins....It just wasn't my day....but...2nd at the Nationals is not too bad...there were other athletes from other states who went home without a medal at all...but...and here's the real secret...It was Inspiring...It was fun ....and it was so good to re-connect with many friends from Around Australia as well as fans of Club Rejuvin8 who came up to me to say how much they appreciated the site.

Its not easy to accept defeat...at least thats from my personal point of view but I have to be analytical of my performance or I will never improve and with the WORLD MASTERS GAMES coming up now next year...it is important to get my head and body together for that great event...If you go to the link on our website you will find out all the information you need to know about THE WORLD MASTERS GAMES SYDNEY 2009...and you will also be able to see our link at the bottom of their website.

THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Well...the National Championships for Masters Athletes will be held in Sydney...at Blacktown actually next weekend...The National Championships is actually like the Holy Grail of Athletics for us " Ole Farts "....other than the World Masters Games which are to be held in Sydney next year...the Nationals are the event to aspire to....This year they are in Sydney...which means some of the best Masters Athletes from all over Australia will converge on Blacktown to do the business.

As for me I will be running the 60 meters and 100 meters and my good friend Chris Mc.Cormick will be running the 60 meters in the 50 plus category...

I believe I am at the top of my game at the moment...my coaches Wayne Luckey and Larry Spencer have got me to "peak "at the right time which means my body bio-mechanically is in about as good a shape as it can get...I just need to focus on the Mental aspect of the comp.

ON TARGET

I MUST LET YOU KNOW ABOUT MY COMPETITION RESULTS FOR SATURDAY JUST PASSED...I HAD A COMMUNICATION WITH MY COACH WAYNE LUCKEY ABOUT WHAT I SHOULD DO ...( WHAT RACE I SHOULD RUN ) WAYNE ADVISED THAT I SHOULD ONLY RUN THE 100 METERS AT MINGARA..NOT MY USUAL 60M 100M AND 200M AS THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS IS ON NEXT SATURDAY...AND..AND...HE SAID ONLY TO RUN IF I WAS FEELING 100 %.

IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL MORNING AND I WAS FEELING 100 %...THE WIND CONDITIONS WERE RIGHT FOR A GOOD TIME...SLIGHT TAIL WIND...GOOD TRACK DENSITY MATCHING THE AIR SO A FAST TIME COULD BE EXPECTED.

I OPTED TO RUN IN THE OPEN MENS 100M...THAT IS WITH THE 18-20 YEAR OLDS..WHY? WHEN I'M 62 IN JUNE AND COULD EASILY HAVE RUN WITH THE OTHER MASTERS ATHLETES...I DID THIS IN ORDER TO PULL A FAST TIME...AS I KNEW THAT IF I WAS UP WITH THEM AT THE FINISH..THEY WOULD RUN LOW ELEVENS...WHICH WOULD PUT ME IN TOUCH WITH THE WORLD RECORD FOR MY AGE IF I WAS WITHIN FIVE METERS OF THEM....

I ACTUALLY DID NOT GET THE START I HAD HOPED FOR BUT NONE THE LESS WAS UP WITH THEM FOR THE FIRST 20 METERS!...THEN THEY STARTED TO PULL AWAY BUT I WAS AWARE OF MY NEED TO FOCUS ON ME ...NOT THEM...AS I CROSSED THE LINE I KNEW THE TIME WOULD BE FAST AS I WAS 6 METERS BEHIND THEM AT THE LINE...THE WINNER RAN 11.2 SECS...WHICH MEANT I WOULD HAVE RUN 11.8SECONDS.
THIS IS 1 TENTH OF A SECOND OFF THE WORLD RECORD. THE AUSTRALIAN RECORD IS 12.1 SECS WHICH ONE OF THE TIMERS GOT ME AT IN COMING 4TH. THIS UNOFFICIAL TIME FOR ME WAS A GREAT INDICATOR AS TO HOW I MAY RUN IN THE NEW SOUTH WALES CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT WEEK END...I WAS ENCOURAGED TO SAY THE LEAST.

I ALSO HAVE SOME INCREDIBLE NEWS ABOUT A PROMOTIONAL EVENT WHICH WILL HAPPEN NEXT MONDAY 10TH MARCH...IT WILL BE SOMETHING THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD BEFORE AND INVOLVES OF COURSE...YOURS TRUELY SO STAY POSTED TO THIS BLOG...IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND...

BEAUTIFUL HERVEY BAY

Well I told you in my last blog that I was Keynote Address Speaker at the MODS Conference and Expo in the Beautiful Hervey Bay in Queensland...thats the coast just off Fraser Island...MODS stands for Modified Sports for Seniors.

I was invited to speak there along with Shane Gould...the remarkable Australian Swimmer who took four Gold Medals at the Olympics...Shane was amazing...She is a Beautiful Human Being with a Nature to Match...and committed to sharing her journey which she did on the second day....I had the honour to have dinner with her and members of the Hervey Bay Council and Organizing Committee on the Friday evening...I was so excited to be sitting next to her and being able to share her amazing energy and love of life..

Denise...Helen...Greg..James...and the whole team were sooooo professional and caring. They made my stay there most enjoyable...

Those who came to be a part of the Expo and to listen to me and Shane were inspirational in themselves...They were attentive and seemed to enjoy the whole process participating in the numerous events laid on...I myself also had a go at Pole Walking...which is a bit like Nordic Skiing...you can do it on the beach..grass or even the pavement...and boy did I feel muscles that I never knew I had...

All in all it was exciting and fun...I'm grateful for the opportunity to have been there and I hope that if they put it on again next year that the Committee may think to invite me again...

COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS

Well the New South Wales Country Championships have come and gone...Yes I was fortunate enough to win both the 100 and 200m for the second year in a row.....Times were not brilliant as there was a headwind of more than three meters per second....thats kind of like running into a brick wall....but...its the same for everyone in the Race.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone on my team especially Larry Spencer and Wayne Luckey my Track Coaches for getting me there...without them of course I would not...could not have won....and the journey is not yet over...even though I now have a knee injury to my right knee...the prognosis is not good with an operation in the wings...but not till after the State and National Championships in March....I know..I know....When a Horse has a knee problem ....they Shoot It...

However...I am hopeful that I will be able to perform at the State in good shape...My masseur will be working to ensure I get there in the best shape possible.

I'm off to Queensland on the 22nd for a couple of days to Keynote address the MODS conference on health and ageing....I'm really looking forward to that..
